Examples of our cultural attitudes that affect the issues in rape/sexual assault

So I keep running across examples of the kinds of cultural attitudes that we've been discussing in class, and that we've identified as being causes of some of the ways that cases of rape and sexual assault work in our society. I'll post some here--and you should, too! As you come across stories that seem to be a sample of the attitudes we note in class, post them here as a response. Thanks!

  1. So here's an example from a Texas Vice Principal--so it represents an institutional authority expressing views that help create the kinds of male-female separation and dysfunction that causes larger problems and that creates attitudes that might lead toward sexual assault.

  2. And WSU provides an example for us to consider. I don't know how quickly this case will unfold, but we'll probably be able to see at least the early stages and compare them to Missoula.

    1. Here is the latest on the Delta Upsilon case, right here in Pullman. From the Moscow-Pullman Daily News. This may be behind a login, so if you can't get there, I can give you a printout.

  3. This New Zealand comedian reacted to a rape in her area with this post: http://goo.gl/iifxQj - It reiterates what we've been discussing in class with alcohol and rape. How the argument in our culture is a man shouldn't be punished because he was drunk and didn't know any better.

  5. In last night's candidate forum, Donald Trump doubled down on an earlier message, indicating that putting men and women together in the military means that rape will happen. I've posted the BBC version, in the interests of getting perhaps a more accurate and objective report.

I'm also posting the site for Protect Our Defenders, to provide the most accurate data on sexual assault in the military.

  6. This article looks at the cultural attitude "if women were as strong as men" argument. While the intention of the article is to, in a way, discredit the Trump campaign, it does bring up a valid point about how we look at the physiological differences between men and women. http://cnn.it/2cuxzFc

Found this story about a Canadian judge giving his idiotic comments and questions in a rape case he presided over.

  8. So I saw this article in print in the Lewiston Tribune, but the online version's behind a paywall. I found the same information here: http://kboi2.com/news/local/man-convicted-of-ui-rape-seeks-overturn-of-verdict

A rapist is trying to get his conviction overturned because he claims that his lawyers didn't do a good enough job and that the judge was biased. He was found to have raped a woman outside a UI fraternity house after picking her up, bringing her out back, and holding her down. And here's his real gem at the end of this article: "Vierstra said that had he been sentenced by a judge who didn't know the victim's family, he would have likely received a less severe sentence, possibly just probation."

  9. This NY Times article is too short to do its subject justice, but it's a start toward changing the rhetoric of rape.

A case that just came up on my local newsfeed, sickening.

  11. This might be good news coming out of the Presidential campaign. The Trump tape about sexual abuse is changing attitudes.

  12. This article from the New York Times details the gender divide on issues affecting how we as a culture respond to sexual assault. The article raises the general issue of gendered points of view on social issues and then applies that frame more specifically to the "gender war" going on in the Republican Party over some of the actions of their candidate for President.

  13. This is a pretty bizarre case, but it could be evidence that the tide is turning in sexual assault cases on college campuses.
